Our Mission

BBG is excited to be building a pioneering solution in northern waste management. We are working to prove that anaerobic digestion technology has the power to provide a closed loop waste management process that is economically sound and environmentally sustainable.

The Team

Jonathan Osborne - Owner and CEO

Jonathan Osborne, the CEO of Balance BioGas Inc. (BBG), combines a deep commitment to environmental sustainability with extensive expertise in renewable energy and waste management. Born and raised in Yukon, Jonathan's journey began as a certified journeymen electrician, evolving into a recognized leader in the bioenergy sector. His work spans several significant projects, including the spearheading of micro-scale anaerobic digester systems and leading comprehensive waste-to-energy feasibility studies under the support of the Yukon Government’s Economic Development Fund.

Jonathan’s role extends beyond project execution to encompass strategic business planning and financial modeling, closely collaborating with academic and research institutions like Yukon University to drive innovation in sustainable waste management solutions. His leadership in government projects, such as the Renewable Energy Project Plan for the Yukon's 2030 GHG Reduction Targets, showcases his ability to integrate complex renewable systems into public infrastructure, proving his prowess in project management and public sector procurement.

At BBG, Jonathan continues to leverage his diverse skill set to pioneer sustainable, economically viable energy solutions, aiming to transform waste management practices and contribute significantly to regional and potentially global environmental goals. His vision for BBG is not only to innovate but also to educate and implement systems that offer long-term benefits to communities and the environment.

Devon Yacura - Balance Environmental Services

Devon Yacura is a nexus thinker and the founder of Balance Environmental Services (BES), specializing in sustainable waste management and environmental consulting with over a decade of experience in Yukon. His academic background includes a Master’s in Conservation Biology from the University of Alberta/Yukon College, where his research focused on the environmental impacts at the Whitehorse sewage lagoon.

Devon's professional portfolio includes diverse projects such as:

  • The design and operation of small-scale biodigesters for remote communities.
  • Mass-energy balance studies for mining operations to optimize waste management.
  • Leading the environmental assessment for the Whitehorse sewage lagoon, which involved studying the occurrence and fate of pharmaceutical and personal care products.
  • Development and implementation of a regulatory framework for municipal biosolids beneficial reuse in Yukon.
  • Winner of the 2018 Ausenco Sustainable Innovation Contest with the project “Sustainable Mining Camp: Biodigestion,” leading to a five-year plan for small-scale biodigester technology implementation.

In partnership with Jonathan Osborne and Balance BioGas (BBG), Devon enhances waste management solutions through innovative waste-to-energy systems. His expertise extends to regulatory compliance, including authoring environmental assessments and water license applications, positioning him as a key figure in advancing sustainable waste management practices.

Kaitlin Halickman - Yukon University Business Intern

Kaitlin Halickman, a born and raised Yukoner, is a 4th year Bachelor of Business Administration student at Yukon University. Her involvement with Balance BioGas started back in 2020 with a school project for a statistics course calculating the cost to heat the prototype digester during the winter months. She has now worked on three Mitacs internships with BBG, developing an economic feasibility model.
